Reid Hardeman Mitchell obituary, Albuquerque, NM

Reid Hardeman Mitchell, historian, author, poet, novelist, guitarist, gourmand and proud New Orleanian, died November 20, 2023, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Mitchell attended Abramson High School. He was awarded a B.A. in History from the University of New Orleans, an M.A. in History from the College of William and Mary, a Ph.D. in History from the University of California at Berkeley, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College. He professed and taught American history at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Princeton University and Rutgers University. His major works of history include "Civil War Soldiers," "The Vacant Chair," and the only book-length scholarly history of the New Orleans Carnival, "All on a Mardi Gras Day." Reid was also a Scholar in the Jiangsu Province 100 Foreign Talents Program and a Professor of English at Yancheng Teachers University in the People's Republic of China from 2006 until the Covid19 pandemic. His literary works include the novel "A Man Under Authority," the novella "Scoundrel, a Memoir of a Medical Incident," the book of poems "Sell Your Bones" and many poems and short stories in the literary journals "Asia Literary Review," "In Posse" and "Cha, An Asian Literary Journal." where he was also a Consulting Editor. Dr. Mitchell was born to Virginia and Edwin Mitchell in 1955 in Atlanta, GA, but grew up from age 2 in New Orleans and resided therein when not engaged in academic life elsewhere, except for his final temporary sojourn in New Mexico. From 2006 he resided in China, first in Hong Kong and then teaching at universities on the mainland. He is survived by his ex-wife Lisa Buurma, siblings Thomas Mitchell, Scott Mitchell and Meredith Clapper, nieces and nephews, scores of admiring colleagues and former students and the fellows of MAHAPTOS who are hereby called into conclave ad loco et hora verbis et inter se annuntiatis.
