Rev. Herschel Leonard Crain, of Greer, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on October 20, 2023 at 81 years of age. Herschel was the son of the late Merritt and Edna Fender Crain and the loving husband of 54 years to the late Evelyn B. Crain.
Herschel was the oldest of nine children and grew to be a very Godly man. He had a heart that yearned to be like Christ. Herschel let the Lord speak through him, not only in his ministries, but also in his daily life. He served as Sr. Pastor at Apalache Baptist Church in Greer for 16 years and he served as Sr. Pastor at Central Baptist Church in Cowpens for 18 years; however, his ministry was not limited by church walls. Herschel spread the Good News of his Lord and Savior far and wide. He will be remembered as a loving and supportive father and papa, who enjoyed spending time outdoors and working in his yard. In fact, he held the "Yard of the Month" title consecutively for many years! Herschel leaves behind a tremendous legacy and will be missed by many.
He is survived by his daughters, Connie Mullinax (Charlie) and Tina Bagwell (Heath); his brothers, Edward Crain (Joyce), and Keith Crain; his sisters, Ginger Cox (David), Maxine Loop and Shelia Davis (Donnie); four grandchildren, Herschel Travis Dixon (Janessa), M. Zachary Dixon (Hayley), Cady Savannah Reigel (Jordan) and AJ Bagwell (Maddie); two great grandchildren, Denver Reigel and Fields Bagwell; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Ann Sanders, MaryLou Leffler, Reva Luther, and Diane Welchel.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at Apalache Baptist Church; 1915 Gap Creek Road Greer, SC 29651 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM with services beginning at 2:30 PM. Pastors Brad Atkins, Keith Crowe, and Travis Dixon will officiate. Interment will immediately follow at Milford Baptist Church; 1282 Milford Church Road Greer, SC 29651.
