Irish Statesman. Born in County Clare Ireland, he began his career as a physician before serving as Ireland's sixth president from 1976 to 1990. Previously he had served as Minister for Education from 1959 to 1965, Minister for Industry and Commerce from 1965 to 1966, Minister for labor from 1966 to 1969, and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1969 to 1973. He was appointed as Ireland's first Commissioner to the European Common Market in 1973, where he served in that capacity until 1976. He died in Dublin.
