Sharon married Eugene G. Harlan on November 21, 1964 in Waterloo, Ia. Tiny in stature, but with strong strength of wing, Sharon was passionate about gardening and bird watching, spending most summer days tending her flower beds.
She was happiest when she was spending time with her grandchildren flitting from a music concert they were performing in, to the lorakeet or Big Bug exhibits. Sharon enjoyed bringing a smile to everyone's face and often did so during her many volunteer efforts. Many will remember their time working with her for the State Street Mile, during the On the Waterfront Festival and singing with the Good Time Singers.
She was a member of Calvary Christian Church, and attended and lead many bible study groups. Sharon enjoyed a good, deep conversation about her faith. She sang the Messiah for many years with the Rockford Choral Union. Sharon was an Amateur Radio Operator, call sign N9SH, and was very active with the Radio Club. There wasn't a Scottish Terrier that she didn't love, however her most beloved companion was Molly, her West Highland Terrier. Sharon was a voracious reader of everything from autobiographies to crime dramas and always had a bible nearby. Sharon was a very practical and no-nonsense person, paying close attention to the daily news.
Survived by her children Wendy Helmer of Rockford and Shawn (Sara) Harlan of Custer, WI; grandchildren, Dustin (Macie Lakin) Helmer, Jessica, Cassidy, and Riley Harlan; and sister, Marilyn (Mac) Lloyd.
Sharon was predeceased by her husband Eugene, after 45 long, loving years of marriage. Also predeceased by her parents; and brothers Harry Dwayne Bennett, Teddy Gene Bennett, Don (Avon) Bennett, Marion (Leonora) Bennett and Bob (Noreen) Bennett.
Sharon leaves behind a legacy of joy and playfulness, love and laughter. It is with great courage that she has left a full life to rejoin with her husband, Eugene in a beautiful garden above.
