James was the ninth child born to John Burleson, Jr and his first wife, Elizabeth (Gimlin) Burleson. He is shown on the family farm in Carlinville in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records, the latter two also showing John's 2nd wife, Elizabeth (Smart) Burleson. He apparently never left the farm, dying there in 1883. His death record shows him as Widowed, but we have not found a marriage record. The record also shows he was buried at Trabue (now, Hacke), where his parents are buried.
