Mr. Newberry served in the United States Army. On his 18th birthday he was fighting in the Korean war in the Battle at Heartbreak Ridge.
He enjoyed boxing (in and out of the ring). He won many awards and medals while on the Armed Forces Boxing Team. A minor injury disqualified him from a spot in the US Olympics.
He wore his military uniform on his first day to work and that is how he got the nickname "Sarge". Sarge was a lifelong member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #953.
He worked in the pipeline industry for 60+ years. He traveled to all 50 states and 12 foreign countries. He helped build the Trans Alaskan Pipeline. Sarge met many lifelong friends during his career and enjoyed helping others get started in the industry.
He is survived by his wife Saowapha Newberry and daughter Jennifer Phuzak Newberry both of Green Forest, Arkansas.
On May 16, 1972, he was united in marriage to Daisy Mae (Villines) Newberry who preceded him in death. They are survived by their children: daughter Teresa Owens and her husband Wes of Green Forest, Arkansas, daughter Alechia Meador and her husband Chris of Green Forest, Arkansas, son TJ Newberry of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter Tracy Newberry and son Todd Newberry of Chisago City, Minnesota, six grandchildren: Madison Baugh and Matthew Owens, and Mason, Jace, Cole and Blaze Meador, and one bother Cecil Newberry.
Sarge was also preceded in death by his parents and five brothers: Von Dean, Tompie, Johnny, Gene and Wayne Newberry.
The family would like to extend a very special Thank You to the nurses and staff of Countryside at Rock Springs for their care of Sarge.
Funeral service will be 10:00 am, Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Rule Cemetery with Brother Mark Bryant officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Assembly of God Church in Green Forest, PO Box 1000, Green Forest, AR 72638, or help support his love for animals and contribute to The Good Sheperd Humane Society, 486 HWY 62 E, Eureka Springs, AR 7262.
