"Oatmeal," as he was fondly known, was educated in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools System and attended the Job Corps upon leaving school. He worked at various jobs including Anne Arundel County Medical Center, St. Johns College and Anne Arundel County Parks and Recreation.
On October 12, 1996, he was united in matrimony to Gwendolyn to whom he was married for 26 blissful years.
Oatmeal received Christ into his life at Second Baptist Church where he faithfully attended confirmation classes and was water baptized.
Oatmeal was a die-hard Chicago Bears football fan as well as a Baltimore Orioles baseball fan. He enjoyed watching Westerns on television and reading the Bible, before his eyesight failed, and listening to music. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Oatmeal was preceded in death by a daughter, Carla; a son, Carlos; aunt, Helen Parker; grandson, Shaun Crowdy; mother-in-law, Lillian McGowan; father-in-law, James McGowan, Sr.; brother-in-law, James McGowan, Jr.; and nephew, Alexander Johnson, Sr.
