WOODBRIDGE -- Laurence S. Weiss, 84, passed away Saturday at the Hollywood Medical Center, Hollywood, FL.
Born in Mischolz, Hungary, May 6, 1919, Mr. Weiss immigrated to the U.S. with his parents and sister when he was three years old, eventually settling in Carteret where his grandparents lived. He attended and graduated Carteret High School and attended Middlesex County College for one year.

After high school, he moved to Perth Amboy and began his career operating a service station in Newark. In 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, beginning training in Fort Dix, serving also at Governor's Island, Fort Jay before moving to Fort Jackson and then to Fort Benning for Officer's Candidate School from which he was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Infantry and assigned to the 94th Division in Salina, KS.

On August 31, 1941, Mr. Weiss married Edith Gelber of Perth Amboy who had remained his wife since that time.

In 1943, Mr. Weiss received orders to go overseas to New Caledonia, then to New Guinea where he joined the 24th Infantry Division and Platoon Leader, shortly reaching the position of First Lieutenant, then Captain and Company Commander. His tour through the Pacific included New Guinea Campaign, Leyte, Luzon, Bataan, Mindanao, and in the original landings on Shikokui, Japan in August of 1945 where he remained until returning to the U.S. and joining the Reserve.

He was recalled to active service during the Korean conflict and was assigned to the Inspector General's Dept. as a major, serving until the end of 1952 and continuing in the Army Reserve until 1958.

During service time, Mr. Weiss was awarded the Bronze and Silver Stars, Purple Heart, American, Asiatic and European Theater Ribbons, and his unit received two presidential citations.

On return from the wars, he again joined his former employer, the American Petroleum Corp. of Perth Amboy where he became president in 1960.

In 1977, Mr. Weiss became Senator Weiss, being elected to the New Jersey State Senate and remaining for 14 years. Senator Weiss was a valued member of a variety of committees, including Agriculture, State Government, Education, Oversight and the Legislative Commission.

He served as a member of the Senate Finance, Revenue, and Appropriation Committee for 12 years and was its chairman for 11 years. He also served as chairman of the Joint Appropriations Committee for six years.

Locally, Senator Weiss served as a member of the Woodbridge Library Board for five years also as president and was instrumental in completing their building program with the construction of the Fords branch and the main library. He was a member of the Middlesex County Planning Board, resigning when he was elected to the New Jersey Senate. Senator Weiss was a founder and director of the "Mid Jersey National Bank" for three years.

Senator Weiss was also a long time member of the Perth Amboy Lions Club and its president for a term. He was a board member and president of Congregation Adath Israel in Woodbridge.

Senator Weiss was predeceased by his sister Eve Hacker. He is survived by his wife Edith; his daughter Patricia, her husband David and their children Jamie Lynn and Evan who reside in Washington, DC; and his son Steven, his wife Nora, and their daughters Donna Lee and April, all of whom reside in Florida.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Temple Adath Israel, Woodbridge.
