Mary Anne (Dalton) Conway was born in Dearborn Way, Michigan, the daughter of Walter M. Dalton and Anne M. Bresnahan. She was the eldest of seven children in a large Irish-Catholic family. She attended Bowling Green State University, where she met her future husband, Thomas "Tim" Conway. After graduating, she became a member of a dancing and singing group that entertained US soldiers stationed overseas. Upon returning to the US, she renewed her friendship with Thomas. After a short courtship, on May 27, 1961, she married Thomas Daniel Conway. During the course of their eighteen year marriage, a daughter and five sons were born into their family.
