William "Bill" Rhyne Abernethy
April 20, 1937 - June 21, 2023

William "Bill" Rhyne Abernethy, 86, of Maiden, passed away on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at Carolina Caring.

He was born April 20, 1937 in Catawba County to the late Howard and Catherine Bost Abernethy. Bill was a member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Maiden where he served on the church council. He attended Maiden High School and retired as a supervisor in the garment industry. Bill was a charter member of Glen Oaks Golf Club and a member of the Maiden High School Athletic Boosters, where he supported the athletic programs wherever he could. He enjoyed spending time at his house on Oak Island, and was an avid fan of the Tar Heels and Nascar.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Sue Rudisill Abernethy; and brother, Reggie Abernethy.

Those left to cherish his memory are;

Randy Abernethy and wife Sarah of Newton

Robbie Abernethy and wife Betty Jo of Maiden

Brother: Charles Abernethy and wife Frances of Newton

Brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Judy Bolick and husband Max of Newton

Grandchildren: Amanda Rembert, Allyson Howard, Amber Leinwand, Aaron Abernethy, Taylor Abernethy, Dylan Abernethy, Amanda Brooks, Matthew Brooks, and Hannah Short.

A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Maiden. Rev. Nathan Yoder will officiate. A private inurnment will follow at Maiden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:45 p.m. at St. Martin's Lutheran Church, and at other times, the family will be at Mr. Abernethy's residence.
