Glenn R. Nixon, 80, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012. A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Thursday, May 24, 2012 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Mark White officiating.
Born in Buffalo, NY, he graduated from Kensington High School in Buffalo and attended North Carolina State University on a football scholarship. After graduating in 1955 he served two years in the US Army. He spent his first two years of his 38 year career as teacher, coach and athletic director in Beulaville, NC before becoming head football coach and athletic director of Clayton High School in 1959. Coach Nixon compiled a brilliant coaching record in football, rolling up an overall record of 203-95-4 and was perennial playoff contenders year after year. He left coaching in 1985 to become Johnston County School's Athletic Director until his retirement in 1995.
Through the years, Glenn has been active in North Carolina high school athletics. He was a member of the NCHSAA Board of Directors from 1979-83, was selected to coach in the North-South All Star Game, the Shrine Bowl in 1982, was named the North Carolina High School Athletic Director of the Year in 1984-1985, and served on the NCHSAA Board of Directors. More recently he was a speaker and committee member of the NIAAA National Conference.
Coach Nixon's honors include recognition as "Tar Heel of the Week" by the News and Observer, numerous Coach of the Year Awards, selection to the NCHSAA Hall of Fame in 1996 and to the Johnston County Hall of Fame. After his retirement in 1995 he focused on his love of painting pastel portraits for many of his friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Glenn W. Nixon and Sally Nixon and his sister, Marge Cervi.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Nixon; son, Rich Nixon and wife Kathi of Clayton; daughter, Julie Nixon and her husband, John Bumgarner of Mint Hill; son, Mickey Nixon and wife, Wendy of Clayton; sister, Jean Notar of Jupiter, FL; brother, Jim Nixon of Corona, CA; grandchildren, Joseph, David, Paige, Mary Michael, Chloe, Luke, Nicholas, Hinton, Georgia Kate and a great grandchild, Hampton. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 35, Clayton, NC 25728 or to Clayton High School Booster Club, 600 S. Fayetteville Street, Clayton, NC 27520.
