Born on January 24, 1931, he was the husband of 49 years to Lucille Lizotte Burnette, and was the son of the late Carl Fields and Dema Griffin Burnette.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Vono Burnette and Jack Burnette.
A U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War, he worked at White Head and Kale in Rouge River, Mich., for 21 years. Moving to Swannanoa, he worked at the VA Medical Center for 11 years.
His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Laura Anne Burnette, of Swannanoa; sons, Timothy Wayne Burnette, of Swannanoa; Eugene Charles Burnette, and his wife, Darlene, of Ventura, Calif.; grandson, Brent Wayne Burnette, and his wife, Charity, of Black Mountain; Terry Michael Mersman, of Swannanoa; great-granddaughter, Haley M. Burnette; great-grandson, Ervin Dale Wayne Burnette; and two nieces.
Funeral services were held Monday in the chapel of Brigman's Funeral Service with the Reverend James Lamb officiating. Burial followed at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Military honors were presented by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team.
