Susan Lillian Stephenson passed away suddenly on May 25, 2012. Sue was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Charlotte, NC where she was graduated from Myers Park High School. She received her BS in Biology from Carleton College (Minn), MS and Candidate's Degree in Botany (University of Michigan), and PhD in cytogenetics and genetics from NC State University in the department of Crop Science.
For twenty-seven years Sue was a member of the North Carolina Academy of Science. She served as the Executive Secretary and Office Manager from 1985-2003 and continued as Office Manager until her death. Formerly she taught high school biology in Chappaqua, NY. Community service was a priority for Sue. She was a volunteer for the Food Bank, Wake County Habitat for Humanity, and the Wake County Technical College (GED). From 1984-1999 she served as a court advocate for neglected and abused children in the Wake County Guardian ad Litem Program.
Sue was a collector of pottery and antique botanical prints. She was also an amateur photographer, cat lover, and avid gardener. She was a faithful member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ardell Moring Stephenson and Lillian Mitchiner Stephenson. She is survived by her sister Patricia Koppeis and husband Francis of NY; niece Stephanie Merten and husband Eric; nephew Joshua Koppeis; and many cousins in Wake, Franklin, and Northampton Counties.
The memorial service is Sunday, June 10, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, 3313 Wade Avenue. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made in the name of Susan Stephenson, PhD to the North Carolina Academy of Science, Department of Biology and Health Sciences, Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27607.
