Jessie Ruth (Kirkman) McElhaney
February 29, 1940 - July 27, 2022

Jessie Ruth (Kirkman) McElhaney, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on July 27, 2022, at the age of 82. She was born on February 29, 1940, in Carteret, North Carolina, to Jessie Gray and Lillie Mae (Marks) Kirkman.

At the age of 17, Jessie Ruth married Charles Donald "Don" Mayo, and together they embarked on a life filled with love and adventure. They were blessed with two sons, Donald Thomas Mayo of Carteret, NC, and John Alyson "Al" Mayo of Port Angeles, Washington.

Tragedy struck Jessie Ruth's life when she lost her beloved husband, Don, in 2002. Sadly, she also experienced the heartbreaking loss of both her sons. First, John "Al" Mayo passed away in 2005 in Port Angeles, Washington. Then, in 2011, she faced another immense loss when both her eldest son, Donald Thomas Mayo, and her youngest son, Roger Elliot Coffey of Clinton, Michigan, born in 1962, left this world. Roger is survived by his father, Thomas Edsel Coffey, and his emancipated Aunt Janice of Knoxville, Tennessee.

In addition to her sons, Jessie Ruth was preceded in death by her third husband, Duncan McElhaney of Morehead City, NC. She also mourned the loss of her parents, Jessie Gray and Lillie Mae (Marks) Kirkman of Carteret, NC, and her siblings, John Edward Kirkman of McGehee, AR, and Mary (Kirkman) Mobley of Macon, GA. Mary was preceded in death by her late widowed husband, Clayton Mobley, of Vero Beach, Florida.

After retiring from Savannah River, Jessie Ruth, who had been a medical receptionist for years, discovered she had a talent for making pottery and enjoyed engaging in word games. She cherished spending time with her family, friends, and her beloved dogs.

Jessie Ruth leaves behind her brothers, William Kirkman and Walter Kirkman, along with seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two daughters-in-law, and a host of extended family members and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Family and friends are invited to share their condolences and memories online at www.mundenfuneralhome.net.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Munden Funeral Home & Crematory in Morehead City, NC, where her loved ones will gather to honor her life and legacy.

Jessie Ruth will be deeply missed, but her spirit and the love she shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all those who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace.
