Mildred "Millie" Beford, Kaukauna, age 95, died on Wednesday May 24, 2017 at St Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton after a short illness.
She was born October 29, 1921 in Calumet County to Louis and Bertha (Haase) Borree, the eleventh of twelve children, one of two daughters.
She was baptized and confirmed at St John Lutheran Church, Dundas, WI, and completed her formal education at the end of eighth grade.
Millie lived with extended family and worked in Menasha for the next few years and was crowned Calumet County Dairy Queen in August, 1939.
Hoping to improve herself as well as to join in the war effort, as several of her brothers did, Millie aced the entrance exam in lieu of a high school diploma and enlisted in the US Naval Reserves "Waves". She served from 1944 to 1946 and was primarily stationed at the Pentagon in Washington DC at the office of the Chief of Naval Operations, attaining the rank of Yeoman Second Class. Millie, along with her husband, was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 258, Little Chute WI, and took pride in her military service contribution.
After her honorable discharge, Millie returned home, took courses in bookkeeping and worked at various businesses over several years, including Kimberly Clark and Bassett Engineering.
On November 15, 1947 Millie married Robert "Bob" Beford in Menasha, who worked in retail after his discharge from the Marines. Millie and Bob combined their talents at one point, owning and operating Grace's Shoe Salon in Appleton for nine years.
Millie went all in, whatever the situation. She took up downhill skiing in her forties, continuing after recovering from a broken leg. She and Bob routinely wintered in Winter Haven, Florida for many years of their retirement, which allowed Millie to golf year-round; she boasted a 5 handicap, and insisted on using the mens' tees. She researched the Borree family genealogy for several generations, making sure each of her siblings (nine survived to adulthood) received a 3 binder of copied documents. Millie was also an accomplished albeit untrained artist, and was honored to have several paintings displayed a day before her passing as part of a veteran recognition ceremony in Appleton.
Millie is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Arthur (Irene) Borree of Kaukauna WI in addition to many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, her sister Elizabeth (Hugo) Deno, and brothers Otto (Alice), Herman (Alexia), Alfred, Walter (Caroline), Harry (Ruth), Rueben, Louis (Rose), Arthur, Raymond (Janet) and Ralph.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 510 Sullivan Ave, Kaukauna WI with Rev Gail Irwin officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
