He graduated in 1953 from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor's degree and master's degree as a National Science Foundation Fellow. He received his PhD in micro biology from Tulane University. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the US Army in 1957 and retired in 1987. His 30 years of military service included many interesting assignments and a tour of duty in Vietnam. Among his military awards and decorations were the Vietnam Service Medal; Bronze Star Medal; Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters; Ranger Tab; and Airborne wings.
He was survived by his wife of 56 years; his son; his daughter; his sister; his brother; and his two grandchildren.
Interment on May 8, 2023.
