Professional Football Player & Coach. For eleven seasons (1949 to 1959), he played at the left-guard position in the All-America Football Conference and National Football League with the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, and Chicago Bears. Born Abraham Gibron, he made his initial imprint on the football field during his years at Elston High School in Indiana. Following service with the United States Marine Corps during World War II, he enrolled at Valparaiso University and later transferred to Purdue University where he played collegiate football. He was selected by the New York Giants during the 6th round of the 1949 NFL Draft, however he ended up signing with Buffalo of the ill-fated AAFC. After the league's folding at season's end, he joined the Cleveland Browns and while providing key blocking for Hall of Fame quarterback Otto Graham and Hall of Fame running back Marion Motley, he contributed to three NFL Championships (1950, 1954 & 1955). He totaled 125 career regular season games and distinguished himself when he achieved Pro-Bowl honors four consecutive years (1952 to 1955). After retiring as a player, he began a lengthy coaching career, initially as an offensive line coach with the Washington Redskins (1960 to 1964). He served at the same capacity with the Chicago Bears from 1965 (initially under George Halas) to 1971, and succeeded Jim Dooley as the Bears' head coach. During his three-year tenure (1972 to 1974), he failed to produce a winning year and was fired following the 1974 season. He went on to serve as head coach of the Chicago Winds of the World Football League and after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the NFL, he served as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach (1976 to 1984). He served as a scout with the Seattle Seahawks from 1985 until 1989. He died following a series of strokes.
