SMITHVILLE - Dexter Dean Addington, 86, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the Community Hospice in Verona after several months illness. He was born June 14, 1921, in Splunge to Elzie Houston and Leanner Jane Kennedy Addington. He lived in Splunge and in Kenosha, Wis. He attended Smithville and Bethlehem schools, and Itawamba Community College. He married Ovie Simmons in 1949; she died in 2006. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He was a self-employed carpenter and plumber, and a member of the Smithville Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Smithville with Bro. Tim McMillen officiating. Burial will be in Young Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include two sons, Gilbert Lynn Addington (Tricia) of Phoenix, Ariz., and Phillip Dean Addington of Nettleton; one daughter, Mona Lee Addington Wren (Jim) of Wren; one foster daughter, Donna Tucker Stafford (Dub) of Amory; two sisters, Velda Hetland (Jim) of Amory and Bernice Roberts (Charles) of Wowawitchitau, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Jason Minich, Shane Addington, Paige Frayer, Israel Wren, Noah Wren, Leigh Ellen Wren, Hannah Wilson, Heather Houston, Adam Addington and Houston Addington; 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers, John, Arthur, Dow and Olen Addington; and four sisters, Wonnie Plunkett, Zora Mae Hughes, Velma Addington and Dorothy Addington.
Pallbearers will be Shane Addington, Israel Wren, Noah Wren, Adam Addington and Houston Addington.
Visitation will continue until service time today at the funeral home in Smithville. Memorials may be made to Community Hospice, 107 Skeet Drive, Verona, MS 38879.
