He immigrated in 1882 and married Hester C. Beard about 1888. He was naturalized in 1890.
In the 1900 census John was living in Ashland New Hampshire with his father-in-law William Beard and his wife Hester C. His brother-in-law Herbert H. Beard age 31 was also in the household. John and Hester had been married 12 years and had not had children. John was a laborer on the railroad as was Herbert. William Beard had been in the country for 12 years.

In 1920 still living in Ashland he was working as a track foreman for the railroad. Daughter Louise, age 18, was working as a nurse in training at the hospital.
Daughter Louise (Marie L.) Murray married Thomas J. Stewart born Scotland on September 24, 1926 in Boston. He was a mechanical engineer son of Thomas Sr. and Sarah Reid, both born Scotland. Louise was a nurse in Boston age 25. She gave parents as John H. Murray born Ireland and Hester C. Beard born Canada.
In 1930 John was 71 and still working for the railroad and wife Hester C. was 60, still living in Ashland. Hester's sister Ida May (Beard) Burt age 74 and her son Albert E. Burt age 41, along with his two children, Albert and Lawrence, were living with them.
