Excerpts from the "Illustrated History of San Joaquin County," 1890, pg 240
W. H. Fairchild, deceased, was born in Pennsylvania in 1819. He was raised on a farm, and emigrated to Illinois at an early age with his widowed mother, his father having died when he was very young. He remained with his mother until after her death, and started for Oregon in 1846. Changing his mind, he settled in Monterey, one of the earliest settlers in California. He engaged in hauling lumber until gold was discovered, and made his way to mine in Stockton. Back to hauling freight, started a feed stable, then rented it and returned to the East in 1852, returning in 1853 with stock he drove across the plains. Captain Weber gifted him 160 acres, and he became of of the most successful farmers in the county.
He married Miss Annie Gray, a native of Scotland in 1853, and proceeded to have nine children. Seven were still living in 1890; Mrs M F Merrill, W E of Santa Barbara, Mrs A B Treadwill, CC, Mrs Swain of Stockton, F G, and A B. Mr Fairchild died in 1882 at the age of sixty-three, and is still remembered by his many friends and acquaintances.
