Joseph A. "Jo Jo" Lewis, 73, of 775 West main St., internationally known clown, died Friday at a hospital in Logansport. He had been ill for the past year.
Born in Sweetwater, Texas, Dec. 25, 1888, Lewis traveled in the early 1900's with Miller Bros. and Arlington's 101 Ranch. considered to be the original clown cop, he also appeared with the 101 ranch as the rider of the "January Mule." He also toured the country with the Peru circuses, including Hagenbeck - Wallace, Sells - Floto and John Robinson and with the Sparks Circus, Robbins Bros., Al G. Barnes Circus, the Owen Davenport Shrine Circus and many others.
He joined the Ringling Bros. Circus in the 1930's and appeared in Madison Square Garden in the 1950's.
Mr. Lewis was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Bunker Hill; the Scottish Rite Consistory, Egypt Temple and Shrine, Tampa, Fla.; the Grotto, Cleveland, Ohio, and Anezeh Temple, Mexico City, Mexico, all Masonic groups and the Elks Lodge.
Surviving with the widow are two stepsons, Pat Kelly and Emmett Kelly Jr., of Peru and five step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Drake-Flowers Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Charles R. Oberlin officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. today.
