born at St. George, Azore Islands. At age of 14 he emigrated to the US, worked in a tobacco factory in MA. Soon afterwards he became a sailor. While whaling on the high seas during the Civil War, the ship he was on was captured by a confederate ship. The prisoners were transfered to San Francisco, Calif. He then walked the rails and mined in the Sierras, worked and lived at Last Chance, Iowa Hill, Grass Valley, Auburn & Newcastle, and worked in the Comstock mine in Virginia City, NV. He then came down to Newark and worked for Mr. Patterson, which he then purchased 10 acres from him and settled with his family.
