Lester James Holcombe, 89, of Holcombe Branch Road, went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the Brian Center of Weaverville. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Cheet and Texie Robinson Holcombe, and the husband of Mallie Ledford Holcombe, who died in 1974. He was also preceded in death by a son: Stewart Holcombe, who died in January 2008; and, 2 brothers: Liston and Charles Holcombe. He was a World War II Army Veteran, an honor guard for President Franklin D. Roosevelt at Ft. Benning, GA in the 3rd wave that landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. Lester was a lifetime member of Paint Gap Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, Sunday School superintendent and teacher. He was a self-employed carpenter and builder, serving Western North Carolina. Lester also enjoyed farming.
Surviving are 2 daughters: Barbara Robinson and husband, Steve, and Regina Holcombe Arnette; a daughter-in-law: Brenda Jamerson Holcombe, all of Burnsville; a grandson: Julian Robinson and wife, Lynn; a great grandson: Brandon Robinson; 2 great granddaughters: Julie and Ashley Robinson, all of Concord; and, 5 sisters: Jennie Penland and Eloise Austin of Burnsville, Grace DeWeese of Kannapolis, Mildred Haas and Georgia Sherlin of Asheville.
Funeral services will be held at 8PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Shane Cassida will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11AM Wednesday in Cane River Baptist Church Cemetery with military graverites by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV.
