Billy Ray Payne, 74, went to be with our Heavenly Father on Thursday, January 26, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born in Gaston County, son of the late Wilbur Meekin Payne and Della Mae Kinsey Payne. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Sue Melton Payne; his brothers, Lewis Payne, Toney Payne, and Allen Payne; and his son-in-law, Rex Mobley.

Billy retired from Pharr Yarns after forty plus years of dedicated service. He loved all types of sports, especially football, basketball, and baseball. He was a huge fan of the South Point Red Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, UNC, and Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed watching western movies in his spare time. He is survived by his son, Michael Payne; his daughter, Susan Mobley; his grandchildren who would light up his life, Alyssa Sisk (Michael), Tristan Payne, Caleb Mobley, and Jennifer Anderson (DJ); his great-grandchildren who were his joy, Braxton Hughes, Paizley Sisk, and Olivia Lawson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. Payne will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, January 29, 2023, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly, NC. The family will greet guests from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.
