David & Mary Ann Hanna…gone but not forgotten.
They were Irish immigrants from Ireland who settled in Waukegan IL. One could imagine the hopes and dreams they had to become Americans. They married and together they had eight children. Living so close to the shores of Lake Michigan it had to be beautiful! David became a US citizen on Nov 1, 1888 in Lake County, IL.
By 1900 they were married for 17 years and David was working as a janitor. They had already buried 3 children. First a stillborn son Dec 23, 1885, Mary Isabelle was about 6 years & died Jan. of 1899. Then came the death of little Sarah Edna, 3 years old, that died April of 1900. . However, they still had 5 great children. In 1903 David died and his wife, Mary Ann died the following year in 1904. Did the have TB, typhoid fever or what?
They had twin grand children that they would never know & love. The birth certificates of the twins would be signed by President Calvin Coolidge and First Lady Grace Coolidge while their son, John Henry,a Washington D.C. police officer was on temporary assignment for the Coolidges’ while the White House was under renovation.
Their 3 living daughters, Jane, Evaleen, and Anne remained in the Lake County, IL area. The three sisters lived together and Jane owned the home in Waukegan IL. Jane was a nurse and the other two office managers and stenographers. The sisters would never marry, but had successful careers which their parents would have been proud of.
The two sons, would go off to California together! In WWI they both fought for the USA. Sadly, Samuel was killed in action & died on Sept. 29th, 1918 and was buried in France. After the return from war, John Henry married and lived in Washington DC. It was John Henry’s twins, Elinore and Robert whose birth certificates were signed by President Calvin Coolidge and First Lady Grace Coolidge. John would go on and retire from the Washington DC police force.++++
