Mrs. Mavis H. Dowling, 70, died Wednesday morning (May 26, 2004) at Baptist Medical Center - Nassau in Fernandina, FL after an extended illness.
She is a native of Broxton, but she was born and raised in Brantley County and made her home in Waycross. She attended Hoboken High School and studied bookkeeping in college. She is a retired bookkeeper from what is currently known as Associated Contractors and former member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She is the daughter of the late Acie Hutchison and Mittie Rowell Hutchison. She is the wife of the late Von Henry Dowling. She is preceded in death by a sister, Lucille H. Joiner.
She is survived by two daughters, June H. Benefield (husband Sidney E.) of Cedartown, and Catherine M. Aker (husband Duncan D.) of Lexington, TN; five sons, Von Allen Dowling (wife Fronia E.) of Yulee, FL, Layton A. Dowling (wife Saundra D.) of Callahan, FL, Acie Dowling (wife Sybil B.) of Yulee, FL, Larry D. Dowling (wife Thelma D.) of Statesboro, and David J. Dowling (wife Lucy D.) of Pemborke; 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; two brothers, D. A. Hutchison of Fernandina, FL, and Noah R. Hutchison of Roanoke, VA; two sisters, Janelle H. Morgan of Blackshear, and Delores H. Yarbrough of Waycross; a brother-in-law, Lee Roy Dowling of Hoboken; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday (May 28, 2004) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Pierce Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, Attn: Web, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.
