Reita Harlene Hetchler Vance
1933 - 2022

Early Life: Reita was born April 20, 1933, in Silver Park, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Clare Edward "Jack" and Alta Norene Kipling Hetchler. In her early years, her younger siblings often pretended to be students and she pretended to be the school teacher. She gained great leadership abilities as a child that helped her as an adult. She joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, along with her family, when she was 14 years old. She was forever thankful for the missionaries who taught her the gospel and for her aunts and uncle who introduced her to the Church. Her love of gardening carried over from her childhood where she was raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada. She grew to be an avid gardner and grew many varieties of vegetables and flowers. Her hard-working parents taught her to work hard and to be frugal and appreciative for all the Lord had given them. There was a great abundance of love in the home and she enjoyed growing up as the eldest of six children.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: She left home to gain more education and to be with more members of the Church. While working for a family in Rosemary, Alberta, she met another wonderful family that would become her in-laws. They introduced her to their eldest son, Richard, and they soon married. Richard and Reita loved their families and soon would become parents of five children, and eventually grandparents of 18 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Their children and spouses are as follows: Valerie (Scott) Dalton, James (Hollie) Vance, Eldon (Suzanne) Vance, Stephen Vance, and Regan (Jana) Vance. As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Reita tried to do her best in all that she did and encouraged others to do the same. She loved working with the Primary children; she was young at heart and enjoyed working with children of all ages. She served as president and teacher in the Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society organizations. Others gravitated to her positive and optimistic view of life. She was a hard worker and felt a need to accomplish much each and every day. She was a friend to many and was always found reaching out with offers to help. Reita loved listening to the leaders of the Church with their messages of hope and encouragement. She loved listening to the hymns of the Church, no matter who was singing them. That being said, she did love listening to the Tabernacle Choir and was excited to see her friends singing in the choir. She didn't require perfection of herself or others, but she enjoyed people putting forth effort, improving and trying their best. Reita was a friend to many people. She reached out to members and neighbors alike to see how she could help them in any way she could. Some would say that they had never met someone quite like Reita, for her friendship was genuine and real. Reita always felt blessed to be surrounded by such good people who enriched her life. Reita was humble and felt uncomfortable in the spotlight, but she also spoke up and took the lead without hesitancy when needed. Reita looked for the fun in life; she wanted to be a part of it. She wanted to share her life with her family and friends and she did! Reita served four missions for the Church in Apia, Samoa; Cuba, New Mexico; Provo, Utah; and Salt Lake City, Utah. She loved each one and wasn't afraid to stretch a little. She especially loved serving eight years as an ordinance worker in the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple. She enjoyed welcoming and serving the brides and patrons as they came to the temple. She had a wonderful smile and laughed often. She has a deep love for all her family members and friends. Each one was so important to her. Reita Harlene Hetchler Vance, 89, peacefully passed away on December 30, 2022, in the home of her daughter, Valerie and Scott Dalton.
