James Vallance was a colliery manager for Dunlop's Collieries, at Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. On his own Death Certificate, certified by his son Henry, it states he is a "coal mine manager, retired". When his daughter Catherine died, James was described as a "mine manager" on her death certificate (1945).

By his wife Mary he had 16 children. He and Mary were buried in the private Lauder family graveyard at the Glenbranter Estate, Argyll.
