Lynn Smith Pope

DENVER, NC - Lynn Smith Pope, age 74, a resident of Denver, NC passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Friday, April 8, 2022. Born August 10, 1947 in Murfreesboro, NC, she was the daughter of the late Jay Wilson and Gwendolyn Hall Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Lehn Pope. She graduated from Murfreesboro High School and was also a graduate of Chowan College. She affiliated at Duke University for Nursing School.

Lynn and her husband, Tony were married in 1970 and lived in Durham, NC for most of their lives and moved to Denver in 2018 to be closer to family. Lynn worked as a Registered Nurse for Duke University Hospital for over 45 years. Her nursing specialties included Pediatric ICU, Urology, and Cardiology. She also worked for many years at the Duke Eye Center before she retired.

Lynn was an avid tennis player in her younger years and was a member at Hollow Rock Racquet and Swim Club since 1975. She was also an original member of her ladies Tennis Club that started that same year. Lynn was thankful for the many friendships that were born from this association. Even though she could no longer physically play tennis in her later years, she always enjoyed meeting up with her friends from the tennis club for their monthly luncheons.

Lynn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and loving sister. She cherished spending time at the beach, with her family and friends and took great pride in being a Duke Blue Devils fan. Lynn was also very creative and enjoyed spending time arranging flowers, making wreaths, painting with acrylics as well as many other crafts. Lynn never met a stranger and she loved sharing funny tales and stories with all that knew her. Lynn will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends.

Surviving are her daughter, Ashley Pope Broder and husband Ian Paul Broder of Charlotte; her grandchildren, Ethan Lehn Broder, Abby Lynn Broder and Lauren Elizabeth Broder; her siblings Joanne Schell (Lee), Jay Smith Jr. (Sue), Kathy Fowlkes (Mike), Al Smith (Doris) and Jewel Johnson (Dan); as well as her 9 nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Beth Sigmon (Mike).

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 13 from 1-2pm at Meherrin Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, NC. The Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, April 13 at 2pm at Meherrin Baptist Church with the Rev. John Porter officiating; Burial will immediately follow in the Church cemetery.
