{🞺} This case study examined the experiences of the late Mrs Bertha Aalberts at Avondrust Lodge residential aged care facility. Avondrust Lodge is in Carrum Downs in suburban Melbourne and was at all material times owned and operated by approved provider, MiCare Ltd (MiCare). It was formerly operated by DutchCare.1
{🞺} The evidence before the Royal Commission consisted of: (a.) the statement of Johanna Aalberts-Henderson dated 26 June 2019, (b.) the statements of Robert van Duuren dated 2 July 2019 and 12 July 2019, (c.) the statements of Jan Rice dated 29 June 2019 and 10 July 2019 and (d.) the statement of Petronella Neeleman dated 2 July 2019 ...
{🞺} Mrs Bertha Aalberts was born in Holland in 1930 and migrated to Australia in 1949. She married in 1951 and like so many other post-war migrants worked hard to raise a family. She and her husband had three children: 2 girls and a boy.
{🞺} Mrs Aalberts' husband passed away in 2005 and she lived by herself until 2018 with the help of her children. As her health declined more help was needed. She suffered from atrial fibrillation, congestive cardiac failure, psoriasis, scoliosis, oedematous legs and other conditions.
{🞺} Mrs Aalberts was assessed initially for a level 2 home care package and then in March 2018 for a level 4 package. However, the family was distressed to be told that they would have to wait for at least a year for the higher level of care that was available under the level 4 package to be provided.
{🞺} They reluctantly began to look at residential care options. It was the preference of Mrs Aalberts that she remain in her own home for as long as possible.
{🞺} Mrs Aalberts was attracted to Avondrust, a Dutch home on the Mornington Peninsula. Avondrust is a Dutch word for 'evening rest'.
{🞺} Mrs Aalberts began living at Avondrust Lodge on 24 May 2018. She walked into the facility with the aid of a walking frame. She was cognisant and continent; she was "able to ambulate and make decisions". Upon arrival at Avondrust, Mrs Aalberts was assessed as a high falls risk due to her limited mobility and poor eyesight caused by macular degeneration. She was also assessed as a high risk in respect of skin integrity.
{🞺} Mrs Aalberts had three falls while she was living at Avondrust that are recorded in the progress notes
{🞺} Mrs Aalberts-Henderson visited her mother at the hospital on 4 July 2018. She was informed by nurses that her mother had bruises on her shins which
she described as a "very large haematoma". It is likely that this injury was caused by the fall on 3 July 2018...
