John Barnhill was the oldest of the 8 children of Robert Barnhill and Sarah (Smith) Barnhill, who were married about 1726 in Ireland. 4 of them were: John Barnhill, Margaret Barnhill, Sarah Elizabeth Barnhill and Robert Barnhill.

John immigrated from Ireland to Philadephia, Pennsylvania on September 28, 1734 along with his father, mother and younger brother Samuel Barnhill.

John Barnhill married Sarah Craig in December, 1750 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. That same year, Sarah's younger sister Jane Craig married John's younger brother Samuel Barnhill, also in Bucks County. Sarah and Jane's parents were Daniel Craig and Margaret (Bromfield) Craig.
Note: There is a Margaret Craig (#180212853) buried in Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in plot H-15-1. There are 2 men named Daniel Craig buried next to her, in H-15-3 (#180212750) and H-15-5 (#180212748). All dates are unknown for all 3.

Later on John and Sarah moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where John became a merchant and ran a fast stage line called the Flying Machine during the 1760's. See The Roll Family Windmill, developed by William Henry Roll, at https://rollwindmill.org/html/blazing star.html for several excellent articles on this form of transportation in the mid-to-late 1700's. John Barnhill and his stage line are mentioned several times.

Research Note ref. Birth/Death Dates: I have also seen Feb. 27, 1728 listed as date of birth, but am skeptical that he was born and died on the same day of the month. I have also seen 1787 listed as year of death. The headstone is very hard to read.
