John Abbenhaus Dies Suddenly Monday
Funeral services will be held 10am Thursday for Mr. John Abbenhaus, with Rev. R.F. Barry officiating in the Sacred Heart Church, before a large congregation of saddened relatives and friends. His sudden death was a shock to the community. Mr. Abbenhaus had seemed in good health, and had cared for his chores the day he was stricken with heart failure. It is with confused feelings we think of the death of him, who had directed our steps along the pathway of morality, and had given us generously of his treasure of sympathy and understanding. We loved him, and dislike any kind of parting. No one can speak of a deceased person so liked as the one we bury today, without realizing that only an insufficient estimate of his life can be presented. The better one knows a man, the less satisfactory seems his portrait, even when it is the work of a careful writer, however faithful the image may appear to those outside the circle of immediate friends. Mr. Abbenhaus was honored by the esteem in which he was ever held by his innumerable friends, here and wherever he had resided. He was distinguished for his practical, religious convictions, his love for his fellow-man, and his thoroughness to duty. He was known to more people than he even knew casually. His stream of wit was deep and wide. Quality, not quantity, were his straits, and to all who were privileged to know him, his death leaves the memory of a cultured gentleman. His pity was devoid of sham, and his conduct at home and abroad mirrored his high ideals. He shunned fame, fraud and pretense. Our farewell of him today shall linger long in our memory of John Abbenhaus Sr., the home-loving parent, the affable father, citizen and churchman.
Mr. Abbenhaus, the son of William and Mary Kane Abbenhaus, was born in 1878 in Bloomfield, Nebraska, and passed away at the age of 68 years. In 1902 he contracted marriage with Kathryn Wagner, of whose happy union two sons were born, both surviving. He resided thirty-seven years in Bloomfield, the rest of his life being spent in Dakota and in Brown and Rock counties, Nebraska. To mourn his loss are his grief-stricken wife, two sons, Raymond of Rapid City, S.D., and John Jr. of Bassett; two brothers, Frank and George; two sisters, Mrs. James Wilcox and Mrs. Frank Cook, also six grandchildren.
The pallbearers will be John H. Clark, Leonard Koch, Anton Stec, Earl C. Harp, Paul Morgan and Frank Esterbrook. The Misses Velma and Yvonne Kock will have charge of the music. Interment will be in the Bassett cemetery.
