Laura Martha Alexander, 92, of Givens Estates, formerly of Asheville, died Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at the Givens Estates Health Care Center.

Mrs. Alexander was born March 26, 1912, in Fairview and was the daughter of the late Benjamin J. and Georgia Sorrells Alexander. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Benjamin Frederick, Frank Eugene, Harry Albert, Benjamin Julian and David Woodrow Alexander.

She is survived by four nephews, Eugene Alexander and his wife Virginia of Aiken, SC, Jimmy and his wife Linda of Anderson, SC, Albert and his wife Sylvia of High Point, NC, and Robert and his wife Alice of Oxford, FL; two nieces, Pat Masters and her husband Allen and Peggy (Mrs. Clayton) Bell of Dallas, TX.

A lifelong resident of this area, she graduated from Fairview High School and Asheville Normal Teachers College. She later received a degree in Library Science from Appalachian State College. She taught at Fairview Elementary School from August, 1935 until June, 1968. She also served as librarian at Oakley Elementary School from August, 1968 until June, 1974, when she retired. She loved all her students and her greatest pride was watching them mature to become caring and community-spirited people that she had envisioned years before.

Growing up, she was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church. After moving to Oakley she became a member of Oakley United Methodist Church where she was very active in the United Methodist Women and served on many church committees. In 1991 she received the honor of "Lay Person of the Year".

Burial will follow at Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery in Fairview.
