Mary Ann Moore was born in 1811 in Carnaveagh, County Monaghan, Ireland, a daughter of Alexander Moore and Agnes Horner ("Nancy").

She married William Gilliland (Gilleland) in 1829.

Mother of six children, all born in Carnaveagh and baptized at Creeve Presbyterian Church.

The family of Mary Ann Moore and William Gilleland ("Gilliand") arrived in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts on 30 August 1847 on the ship Oneco. Mary Ann Moore's brothers James Moore and Alexander Moore (Jr.) and maiden sister Nancy Moore were already living in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

By 13 August 1850, the family of William Gilleland ("Guillerland") and Mary Ann Moore was living in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island just south of Providence.
