Mrs. Margaret M. Howard, age 93 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 12:05 P.M. Sunday February 10, 2008 at Heartland Nursing Home of Greenville. .
Mrs. Howard was born February 16, 1914 in Darke County Ohio. Daughter of the late Glen & Della (Netzley) Puterbaugh.

Margaret was a graduate of Greenville High School and following her graduation met and married Robert F. "Bob" Howard on March 26, 1935. Her husband Bob was elected as Darke County Sheriff in l964 and Margaret assumed the position of Matron. Upon her husband Bob's unexpected death on March 30,1966 Margaret was appointed by the Central Committee of the Darke County Democratic Party as Sheriff, making her the only female to serve in that capacity in Darke County history and one of only a few at that time in Ohio. Margaret served as Darke County Sheriff until the next general election in 1968 then returned to her former position as Matron of the Darke County Sheriff's Department, a position she so proudly held until her retirement in December of 1980.

Margaret was active in the community during her years as Matron and remained active in retirement. As a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greenville, she served as financial secretary, the church's memorial chairperson and a member and secretary of the United Methodist Women's Society. In addition, she was a longtime member and past treasurer of the former Darke County Society for Crippled Children and Adults (today known as F.A.M.E.). Mrs. Howard was also a member and past treasurer of the Greenville Business and Professional Women's Club; a past president and life member of the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary; a former Girl Scout Leader; and a volunteer for the Heart Fund, Cancer Society and March of Dimes. She was formerly a member of the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association. In 1997, Margaret was chosen Parade Marshal for the Darke County's Annie Oakley parade. Margaret also bowled in a winter league and played golf almost daily at White Springs until the age of 80.

In Addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by her Grandson Christopher A. Jones July 1, 1979 and a sister Betty Phillippi.

She is survived by her daughter and son in law Judy A. & Alan B. Jones of Greenville; Grandchildren Shelley K. and husband George Bleil of Washington Township, Montgomery County, Ohio and Robert H. "Rob" Jones of Dayton, Ohio. Great Grandchildren Christopher R. Lord and Caroline R. Lord. Also a Sister Lois L. Henninger of Greenville and Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.

Funeral Services for Margaret will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday February 15, 2008 at the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home 1499 N. Broadway Greenville, Ohio with the Rev. Joe Payne officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5 till 8 P.M. and on Friday l hour prior to the services in the Funeral Home. The V.F.W. Ladies' Auxiliary will conduct a Memorial Service on Thursday at 7:45 P.M.

It was the wishes of Margaret that Memorial Contribution's be given to the Darke County Sheriff's Patrol or the First United Methodist Church.
