Soldotna resident Gerald G. Blevins, 75, died June 1 at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna after a long illness. A funeral was held at the Kenai Masonic Temple. Kenai Masonic Lodge #11 officiated. A military graveside service followed conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10040. Burial took place in Spruce Grove Memorial Park.
Mr. Blevins was born July 29, 1916, in Rosebud, Mont. During World War II, he was a combat infantryman in the North African Campaign, Normandy Invasion and the European liberation. In 1953, he received his discharge at Fort Richardson and remained in Alaska until his death. He owned and operated a contracting business in Anchorage. He was a 25- year member of Local 302 of the Operating Engineers, working the pipeline and White Alice sites. In 1968, Mr. Blevins moved to Soldotna to operate the Powerhouse at Sport Lake Road. In 1980, he retired and opened a saw-sharpening business in his home. He will be remembered by his friends and neighbors for his Irish heritage. St. Patrick's Day was celebrated to the fullest. He enjoyed Irish songs and jigs and was an avid Irish storyteller, philosopher and poet. Mr. Blevins was also a 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner and member of Kenai Mason Lodge #11.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Elsie of Soldotna; his daughters, Virginia and Patsy of Virginia and Penny of California; his son, David of California; and two grandchildren.
