GLADEWATER - Funeral services for Dr. Saunders M. Thomas Jr., 79, of Gladewater will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Croley Funeral Home Chapel with Larry W. Osborne officiating. Burial will be in Gladewater Memorial Park. Dr. Thomas was born March 21, 1922, in Simms, Bowie County, Texas. He died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002.
.. He was a member of the first graduating class of James Bowie High School, and he then enlisted in the United States Army in 1939. Dr. Thomas served in France during the European Campaign in the United States Army Medical Corps and Glider Division.
.. He enrolled in Texas A&M and received his doctor of veterinarian medicine degree in 1950. At that time, he opened Thomas Animal Clinic in Gladewater, a business he owned and operated for 33 years. After retirement he and his son owned and operated Thomas and Thomas Farms for Pilgrim's Pride.
.. He was an avid duck hunter, turkey hunter, bass fisherman and outdoorsman. Each October, all of his brothers met for the big squirrel in the river bottom in Simms, Texas for a week of camping and hunting.
.. He was a past president of the Gladewater Rotary Club; a past president of the Gladewater Municipal Hospital Board, having served 20 years; a member of the American Veterinarian Medical Association; and a member of the Texas Veterinarian Medical Association. The Junior Chamber of Commerce recognized him as Man of the Year. He was a member of the Gladewater Masonic Lodge.
.. Dr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 40 years, Helen F. Adams Thomas of Gladewater; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Karen Thomas of Longview; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Bill Brackeen of Gladewater; three granddaughters, April Thomas of Longview, Kimberly Thomas of Longview and Carrie Thomas of Austin; one grandson, Adam Weber of San Antonio; his mother, Grace Higbee of New Boston; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Arthur and Marie Thomas of Baytown, Gerald and Melba Thomas of Simms, Walter and Priscilla Thomas of Jefferson, Bobby and Velda Thomas of Simms, George and Pat Thomas of Gladewater and Johnny and Jimmie Thomas of New Boston; one sister, Betty Hatley of Charlotte, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews."
