MR. ERIC JOHNSON BARKER - Leamington Spa Courier - 30th March 1928

Deep and widespread sympathy has been extended to the Rev. and Mrs. Johnson Barker, of Wolston Vicarage, near Rugby, whose only son died suddenly on Friday last.

Mr. Frederic Carnaby Johnson Barker was educated at Bow School, in Durham, and King's School, Worcester. On leaving school, after a short period in a local bank, he joined the staff of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, he served in Singapore and Hong Kong.

In July of 1914 he returned to England for a holiday, and in the following month the Great War began. He was amongst the first to respond to the call for men and was sent to France in January 1915. He was later transferred to Italy and was one of the last to be demobilised. He was mentioned in dispatches in 1917. He returned home incurably broken in health by the exposure and hardships of his war service. His endeavour to resume work was interrupted by long periods of illness, and at the end of last year he was compelled to resign his position after a brave and hopeless attempt to continue. He then went home, and after three months went to a shelter in Harbury in the hope of improving his health. There his death occurred. He leaves a widow, Lilliam Johnson Barker.

After the war, in December 1919, Eric took up a position on a rubber plantation in Singapore.

Eric died just two days before his 43rd birthday. Coincidentally, his father also died on the 23rd March, but in 1945.
Laid to rest on the 27th March.

In 1939, Eric's widow, Lillian, 56, was living in St. Marylebone, London, with her sister, Jessie and her husband, Sydney Shackle. Lillian was a housekeeper and nurse. As far as l am aware, Lillian never remarried and may have died in 1959, aged 76.
