James J. "Rabbit" Sweat, 73, died Tuesday, February 9, 1999, at his home after a brief illness.
The Bostwick native had lived in Bostwick for 55 years, coming from Clay County. He was a member of the Bostwick Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 5th Air Service Group while stationed in the Philippines. He received the Pacific Campaign Medal, the Philippine Independence Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He also served with the Florida National Guard for many years. He retired after 26 years as a machine adjuster in the Bag Factory at Hudson Pulp and Paper Company.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margie Wilkinson Sweat of Bostwick; sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Kim Sweat of High Springs, Fla. and James and Julie Sweat of Jacksonville; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Williams Sweat and Fred Williams of Bostwick and Tanya and Vernon Dickerson of Mount Holly, N.J.; brothers, Homer Sweat of East Palatka and J.R. Sweat of Palatka; grandchildren and spouses, Terri and Jay Hebert, Lana and Randy Burkes, Kristin Williams and Josh Mitchell, Justine and Jason Sweat, Kali and Brandon Smith, Meagen, Jordan, and Ryan Sweat; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Foy Bell, Lee, Shawn, and Shelby Hebert, Laci and Katie Burkes, and Josh Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. at the Bostwick Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Weeks and Rev. John Ingram officiating. Burial will follow in Bostwick Cemetery with American Legion Bert Hodge Post No. 45 conducting military honors.
Friends may call today, 6-8 p.m. at the Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.
