Actress. She acted in over 50 films and over 50 television shows. Best known for her portrayal of Nurse Ratched in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975). She won an Oscar, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe for this role. She also played the Bajoran religious leader Kai Winn Adami in the television series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" from 1993 to 1999, and Sebastian's aunt Helen Rosemond in the movie "Cruel Intentions" (1999). Her roles in the television series "Picket Fences" in 1996 and "Joan of Arcadia" in 2004 also earned her two Emmy Award nominations. In 2017, she played Rosie in "Girlboss" on Netflix, which was her final role. She was the daughter of the Reverend Robert Fletcher and his wife Estelle née Caldwell, both of whom were deaf, but she and her three siblings all had normal hearing. Gallaudet University bestowed her with an honorary degree in 1982 due to her work with the deaf and hard of hearing.
