Constance A. Corbett of Manahawkin, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on December 25, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.
Born October 31, 1932, in Lowell, MA, Connie was a good student and high school cheerleader who loved going to the school games and dances. She took piano lessons at the local convent where she was a frequent visitor.
While in high school, Connie met Jack Corbett at a soda shop, just like in the movies. He had joined the Marine Corps and was home on leave hanging out with his brother Bob Corbett. Bob introduced them and she said it was love at first sight. She was 16. Only-child Connie had no idea she was about to become part of a large and loving Corbett family for the rest of her life. They married January 26, 1952. Jack in his dress blues and Connie in a borrowed wedding gown. She became a military wife that day with all the responsibilities that came with it and she never looked back.
She traveled the country with Jack to wherever he was stationed and had five children along the way in four different states (Rhode Island, South Carolina; Hawaii and North Carolina.) Raising a large family in her mid-20s while her husband served his country and fought two wars (Korea and Vietnam) was no easy task but she did it willingly and loved being a mom. No cell phones, no computers and certainly no FaceTime, in those days communication was via u.s. mail. Every night after dinner she would sit at the kitchen table and write to him. Seven and eight page letters were the norm. She would tell him everything that happened each and every day; and with five children that was a lot to communicate. The only way she knew he had received her letters (or was still alive) was when she got a letter from him. Sometimes she waited for weeks.
Connie was old school. You always got the untarnished truth from her. She was honest to the end. She loved Jack and her kids and didn't need much else out of life. One of the strongest women God created. Her family is her legacy.
Connie is predeceased by John A. "Jack" Corbett, husband and sweetheart for 36 years; mother Simone Dunleavy; and son Michael J. Corbett. She is survived by her four children, Shirley Corbett, Maureen Corbett Delany, Robert Corbett (Kristin) and Patrick Corbett; five grandchildren, Briana Piserchia, Jeffrey Corbett, Allison Lowden, Alexis Corbett and Dylan Corbett and five great-grandchildren, Adrianna Piserchia, Henry Perez, Jr., Jase Lowden, Layla Corbett and Aubree Corbett.
