James Brent "Jim" Dalebout
1952 - 2022

James Brent Dalebout (Jim) passed away at home on August 18, 2022 from complication of a stroke he suffered 3 weeks earlier. Jim was born in Provo on February 24, 1952 to Harold "Dutch" Dalebout and Hazel Louise Haley Gabbert, the youngest of 4 kids. He spent his first few years on Brookside Drive in Springville before the family moved to Orem.

He attended Spencer Elementary, Scera Elementary, Lincoln Jr High and Orem High School, graduating in 1970. He received a full ride scholarship to BYU where he had planned on pursuing a degree in law. But partying and fun caught up to him and he was unable to keep the scholarship. Then he met Claire Johnson while working at Frosty's in Provo. They married in 1972 and had 4 kids and settled in southwest Orem. They later divorced.

Jim never remarried but spent the rest of his life caring for his kids and grandkids. He was the most amazing grandpa to Christina. He made sure she had an adventure every day.

Jim was a talented accountant. He hired on at Geneva Steel in 1975. He worked with his dad for 4 years and also worked as a cost clerk in the open hearth. He was there until 1982 when he was laid off during the recession. He returned to BYU to try and finish his education. Unfortunately it became impossible for him to raise children, support a family and attend college at the same time. He left school and went to work at Intermountain Health Care where he worked as a come down clerk and later became CFO of Accounts Receivable. He worked there until 1992 when he was able to return to college and finish his education. He received a BS in Finance from BYU and a BS in Accounting from Utah State. He was 42 years old when he graduated. He instilled the importance of higher education to his kids and tried to help them make it a priority.

Finding work after college became difficult. He had run a small tax business out of his house in Orem since 1978 and he decided to make that his full time work. His persistence and talent helped him build DaleTax from a business in a spare bedroom to a full service accounting firm that has been recognized several times as on one of The Daily Herald's "The Best in Utah Valley". His son Jeff came to work with him in 2001 and for 21 years they worked side by side.

Jim's clients were his friends. He loved working with them and solving their problems. He would do anything and everything to make sure that people were taken care of. He would come in late hours to accommodate other's schedules. He would work weekends. He cancelled trips. He would pay people's penalties. The generosity of his time, talents and knowledge can never be replaced and he leaves a gaping hole in the community.

As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was the eternal clerk. He served as either finance clerk, ward clerk or stake clerk 9 different times. He loved working behind the scenes making sure wards and stakes functioned as they should.

Jim loved his grandkids and had hoped to start semi-retiring to make them a priority. He had big plans to travel with them and wanted to spend more time doing what they wanted. Unfortunately, those plans never worked out and we are heartbroken that he never got to do what he really wanted to do with the last years of his life.

Jim is survived by his son Craig, daughter Angie, son Jeffery (Melinda), 3 grandkids, Christina, Haley and Kelsey, brother Michael (Jenny), brother-in-law Danny Shumway, and sister Linda (Stan) Schourup. He was proceeded in death by his parents, sister LeAnn, son James Richard (Rik), and infant granddaughter Alyssa Vincent.
