STABBING SUSPECT'S HEARING OCTOBER 26, 1989

An October 26 preliminary hearing has been scheduled for an Erwin man charged with fatally stabbing his brother in Johnson City on October 13, 1989.

Ben Lee Metcalf, 23, Route 2, Erwin, was charged with first-degree murder Friday evening about an hour after his brother, Jackie Scott Metcalf, 24, was found in a field off Liberty Bell Boulevard with a single stab wound to his chest.

Metcalf was arrested about one mile from the field after a brief foot chase by police. According to a report, Metcalf told another person he had stabbed his brother.

In a Monday morning arraignment hearing, Municipal Judge Mike Davenport set Metcalf's bond at $100,000.00 and appointed Public Defender Jeffrey Kelly and attorney Gary Goldstein to his case.

Funeral services for Jack Scott Metcalf, 24, Erwin, who died Friday, October 13,1989, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Erwin Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Allen Davis will officiate. Interment will follow in State Line Cemetery. Cousins will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Erwin Memorial Funeral Home, 1015 North Main Avenue, is in charge of the arrangements.
