Lieut, Gabriel S. Adams, a well known veteran of the Civil War died at his home on North Division street,at an early hour on Tuesday morning, of the infirmities of age. ile was in his 83d year and bad been in poor health for some years
Early in life the boy decided to strike out for himself and he came to
Peekskill, April 1. 1857. He found employment with William S. Amos, a
cigar and tobacco dealer. He remained with Mr. Amos until early in 1862,when associated with Harry Forman
He was born in Deckertown NJ Sept 15 1842
Mr. Adams was mustered into the service September 2, 1862, The regiment under command of Col. Wm. H.Morris went |o Baltimore and on October 6, with the addition of two companies was designated the Sixth New York Heavy Artillery. The deceased was with the regiment as a private for some time. He was then promoted to sergeant.
During the year 1864 there were many decisive battles and the regiment lost heavily. For gallantry during the fights of October 1864, when the regiment was opportunely saved by the arrival of General Sheridan Adams was promoted to first leiutenant.
He was mustered out and honorably discharged June 28, 1865.
On returning to Peekskill, he spent some time in various parts of the country. He was in business at Highland Falls for a few years, then returned to Peekskill and opened a cigar store on Division street. Later he sold it to a Fishkill man named Goldsehmidt. He was employed by the New York Central rail for ten years and then returned to work at his trade, fn 1S92 in company with Robert Johns he formed the firm of Robert Johns & Company, whose specialties were the Imperial and Our Own cigars. He remained with that concern until a few y e a r s ago The deceased was twice married.
His first wife was Susan L. Purdy.
daughter of Theodore Purdy, of Varians Mills, whom he married November 17, 1868. She died about sixteen years later. December 21. 1903, he married her sister. Grace Irene Purdy who died March 15. 1915
