Martha Alice Opple, 90, Peru, passed away at 4:08 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008 at Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru.

She was born March 8, 1917 in Peru, the second of seven children to Earl and Martha Donat Holland. She married Floyd Opple at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church on Sept. 30, 1939, and he preceded her in death on June 24, 1995.

Martha always enjoyed spending time with her family. They were her life. She loved to play cards with her great-grandchildren. Over the years her interest in nature covered numerous areas. She loved to grow Peace roses and snapdragons. Martha loved to watch the deer that roamed in the woods in the back yard. Years ago she raised a baby squirrel and a raccoon that were motherless.

She worked at the Square D Company for 20 years, and prior to that she worked at Deluxe Coil and General Tire in Wabash. She and her husband Floyd owned and operated Opple's Nursery in Peru for 15 years.

Martha was a charter member of the Square D Credit Union, now known as Hometown Federal Credit Union. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and the Altar & Rosary Society.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Bell, Peru; a sister, Adeline Clark and friend Roy Wulgemuth, Peru; four grandchildren, Lauri Skeans and husband Joe, Warsaw, Kimberly Hawkins and husband Brian, Peru, Michael Bell and wife Jane, Peru, and Patrick Bell and wife Amy, Peru; 11 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two infant sons; two sisters, Mary Struble and Margaret Kilian; and three brothers, John, Dan and Robert "Dutch" Holland.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Martha Alice Opple will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 58 W. Fifth St., Peru, with the Rev. Francis I. Kilcline III officiating.





Burial will be in St. Charles Catholic Cemetery
