Mr. Barnes worked as a truck driver at Fort Drum from 1972 until retiring in 1991. He was previously a salesman for various food distributors. He was a member of Stone Presbyterian Church, the VFW Post 1400, American Legion Post 61 and the Eagles Club.
He was born June 25, 1923 in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, a son of Herbert and Janet Halliday Barnes. Mr. Barnes served with the US Army from February 1943 until November of 1945. He served with the 3rd Armored Division in the European-African- Middle Eastern Theatre of Operations. His awards include the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.
He married Della Wiley Pitcher in 1955. She passed away in 1994.
Mr. Barnes is survived by a brother and his wife, Ronald and Sheila Barnes, a sister Vada Davis, all of Watertown, a sister-in-law, Daisy Barnes and family, Syracuse. Donald is survived by a step-son, Robert (Fran) Pitcher and family, a step daughter-in-law, Jessie Pitcher and family, all of Watertown, and nieces and nephews.
Don was predeceased by a brother, William Barnes, Sr., a son, Larry Peterson, and a step-son, Roger Pitcher.
Mr. Barnes is survived by his companion, Avis Bartlett Erwin, Watertown.
A memorial service was held at the Stone Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Evans Mills Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements with the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown.
