The oldest of 12 children, C.L. was born in the Swiss Community of Yancey County on November 11, 1931 to the late Grady Lee and Ollie Belle Proffitt. He graduated from Bald Creek High School near Burnsville. He was preceded in death by his wife Martha, brothers Jerry and Wendall, and sisters Louise, Judy, Ida, and Delyla.
A man of integrity with an unmatched work ethic, C.L. retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation in 1984 after 33 years. He was blessed with many more years building houses with Lyle and Carroll Hall, and he especially enjoyed doing projects for his children. He loved meeting and helping people and was respected by all those with whom he worked and served.
C.L. was an active member of Faith Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He participated in numerous mission efforts including building handicap ramps and traveling with the N.C. Baptist Men on disaster relief teams.
He is survived by four brothers, Floyd Proffitt (Linda) of Granite Falls, Charles Proffitt (Nellie) of Weaverville, Gary Proffitt (Susan) of Rogersville, TN, and Roger Dale Proffitt of Asheville; one sister, Patricia Dills (Tony) of Weaverville; five children, Danny Proffitt (Glenda) of Memphis, TN, Dennis Proffitt (Pat) of Sylva, Debbie Keisler of Wesley Chapel, FL, David Proffitt (Christy) of Sylva, and Darrell Proffitt (Julia) of Asheville; grandchildren, Anthony Proffitt, Stephanie Kesner (Bobby), Cassie McAbee (Brad), Blake Proffitt (Felicia), Brady Proffitt, Megan Robitaille (Nichlaus), Lindsey Smathers (Josh), Josh Proffitt, Chloe Proffitt, Madison Proffitt; and numerous great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 13 at Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastors Peter Mudge and J.D. Grant officiating. A graveside service will be held afterward at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to N.C. Baptists on Mission, PO Box 1107, Cary, N.C. 27512-1107, designated for "Disaster Relief Fund."
