Phil Wayne White, affectionately known to many as just "Mr. Phil," passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 1st. Mr. Phil left this earth and the worldly tethers that bound him here, to reunite with those who have paved the way to heaven before him; including his father Walter Samuel White, his mother Virginia Dare Collins White and Spooner, his favorite granddog.

Phil was born and lovingly raised in Rocky Mount NC where he met the love of is life, Linda Faye Little; they married in 1968, less than a year later he graduated from ECU. Though he graduated with a degree in Geography, his skills as an Optician were razor sharp. He had learned these skills and gained licensure working for his best friend's father, Ralph Wallace at Rocky Mount Opticians through his high school and college years. The love he had for the water, his desire to provide a good life for his family and having these skills, led he and Linda to open Whites Opticians in New Bern in 1975.

Phil spent the next decades of his life not only working hard but also enjoying all the places he treasured, had to offer. He loved nature. With friends and family he and hunted and fished. When he felt he needed his own time, tinkered in the garage or garden. He was always messing about with something. In his last 20 or more years, he with Linda by his side most of the time, spent many, many weekends and holidays down east at Harkers Island or Straits where they met wonderful friends like Ray J and Dudley, who were here, with him even to his last day. From his first "Wobble Box" as he called it, to the little fishing camp he and mom bought and dubbed "The Manor," that's where you could find them, together... still tinkering.

Those whom he loved and those who loved him are left here, waiting to meet again some day. His wife, Linda, his three children. Lynda Gina, William Gilbert and Gary Wayne White. Brothers Walter and Dennis White, as well as nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren; and of course, friends far too numerous to count.

There was one more constant in Phil's life, he never lost his affection for Marshal Dillon and Gunsmoke; watching was an every day occurrence. Just like Matt Dillon, if ever there was a "good guy" who deserved to wear a white hat... it was Phil.

In lieu or addition to flowers, donations will be gladly accepted to: Sylvan Heights Bird Park, 500 Sylvan Heights Park Way, Scotland Neck, NC 27874 or Craven County Hospice, 2818 Neuse Blvd, New Bern, NC 28562.

Visitation will be Saturday, June 4th from 6-8 pm. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 5th at 2 pm. Both to be held at Cotten Funeral Home, 2201 Neuse Blvd, New Bern, NC 28560.
