Ila May Johnston, 91 years old, gained her wings peacefully Thursday, April 21, 2022 at her home surrounded by family in Summerville, SC. She was born on August 15, 1930 in Hemingway to Leo "Smash" Thompson and Lillie (McAlister) Thompson.
Ila worked at the telephone company until she fell in love and married Gene F. Johnston on October 14, 1955.
She loved Elvis Presley, hummingbirds, gardening, and crocheting. She was an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother. Ila was a devoted Christian who loved her church family. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Ila is preceded in heaven by her husband, Gene F. Johnston; parents, Leo "Smash" Thompson and Lillie Thompson; her sister, Inez (Thompson) Hunt; and her brother, Doris Thompson.
Ila leaves behind her son, Gene A Johnston and his wife, Cathy; and daughter Cheryl (Johnston) Lane and, her husband, Bob; her grandchildren Carrie McCoy, Angele Bice, Jennifer Lane, Nickie Griffith, and Jerimy Johnston; and her many Great Grandchildren.
Ila Johnston will have a Visitation on Wednesday April 27, 2022 from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Carolina Memorial Funerals & Cremation, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406. Her Services will follow in the Chapel from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. The Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens.
