Born in Buncombe County on November 28, 1916, he was the son of the late Benjamin W. Lanning and Sarah Drake Lanning. He was a member of South Asheville Baptist Church and was retired from Biltmore Dairy.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Allene McMahan and two brothers, Kenneth and Donald Lanning.
Alvin served his country during World War II as a truck driver in the 349th Ordnance Depot Company, 84th Division, 9th Army. He participated in active combat, including the Battle of the Bulge and at Omaha Beach.
He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Interment will be in Tweeds Chapel Cemetery.
